Acupuncture

Essentially, acupuncture restores the healing ability of the body and brings the body back to homeostasis. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) , Qi – the vital life-force energy – flows around our body through specific channels, known as meridians, and disease or disorder occurs when the flow is restricted.  The skilful placement of needles facilitates the movement of Qi, essentially returning the body to a state of balance, or homeostasis.

Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine has developed over several thousand years and is one of the oldest continuously practiced health care systems in the world.  The philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is that illness, disorder, and pain are caused by an aspect of the body/mind being out of balance, and herbs are prescribed to restore that harmony. TCM principles include that different herbal substances have different types of Qi, as well as thermal, and dynamic natures. Understanding the nature of the substances combined with the ability to diagnose the imbalance within the body allows our practitioners to prescribe a formula to address the disharmony that is causing disorder.   

 

Massage Therapy

Massage is the manipulation of the body’s soft tissues for therapeutic effect.  The two main physiological effects are: increase of blood & lymph circulation; relaxation & normalisation of soft tissue.  A whole body massage will have a general de-stressing and tonic effect, while a remedial massage is targeted at a localised pain or injury, with the aim of promoting the healing of specific tissues.

 

Compassionate Inquiry

Compassionate Inquiry (CI) is a psychotherapeutic modality that aims to reveal what underlies the appearance that we present to the world, thereby helping us to reconnect with our true selves.  It is an approach developed by Dr Gabor Maté who maintains that the essence of trauma – and in its broadest sense all symptoms are manifestations of some kind of trauma – is separation from the authentic self.  It follows therefore that the purpose of therapy is to help us to come back to our authentic selves.

 

Breathwork

Breathwork is a therapeutic process that offers a way to personal transformation by enabling self-awareness.  The practice of specific purposeful breathing patterns can induce a different state of consciousness wherein energy and emotions that are trapped deep in our bodies are freed, leading to the processing of unresolved trauma. This in turn can lead to us recognising negative core beliefs. Once these beliefs and patterns have become obvious, we are able to adopt strategies to change them.

 

Inner Space Therapy

Inner Space Techniques (IST) are a set of therapeutic and healing techniques based on the inner space of meditation. The techniques allow you to access the unconscious parts of your psyche and get to know your true self. The approach is practical and profound.

For thousands of years, meditators have discovered that beyond the conscious surface level of the mind lie forces that shape personality and cause stress, neurosis, and at times even ill-health.

Movement Therapy

Movement therapy is essentially the modern way to think about exercise to keep the body at its optimal. It is for anyone who wants to get fit, but feels overwhelmed and doesn’t know where to begin, and/or feels like they just don’t have enough time, or feels like an injury is preventing them from starting.

Movement therapy uses prescribed movements/exercises to help a person deal with an illness, a disability, or life challenges that keep them from functioning fully.

Tai Chi

Originally practiced as a martial art, Tai Chi has also developed as a holistic form of exercise and meditation, and this is how we are teaching it at Project Dao. Coordinating slow rhythmic movements based on Chinese martial art forms with relaxed deep breathing leads to a calmness that has many health benefits both physical and psychological. Regular practice will lead to improvements in balance; flexibility; aerobic fitness; muscular strength & endurance; joint integrity; and ability to deal with chronic pain. Many people also find a reduction in anxiety and anger and an improvement in mood. In short, you will become a calmer, happier, healthier person. Tai Chi is sometimes referred to as moving meditation. Its benefits are so varied and plentiful it could be referred to as moving medication.

Qigong

Qigong practice is an ancient system of exercises rooted in Chinese medicine and philosophy designed to cultivate Qi – the life force that animates the body. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine nothing is more important to health than the uninhibited flow of Qi through the body. Qigong are simple exercises wherein gentle movements coordinated with the breath and the use of visualisation help to promote the cultivation and movement of Qi in the body.

Qigong is very accessible. It is non-competitive, low-impact, slow-moving, and unforced. The muscles are relaxed rather than tensed, the joints are not fully extended or bent, and connective tissues are not stretched, so far less strain is put on the body. A further beauty of these practices is that they are adaptable for any age or physical condition.
