More than the majority of my new patients I saw in

More than the majority of my new patients I saw in the last 12 months said they suffer from anxiety.

Turned out, I was no exception.

Until that changed.

What happened is that once I got friendly with my anxiety, I became more flexible, more open, and pleasant. Living in alignment with my heart and visions, with ease and vitality, started from being curious about my anxious feelings. It’s that simple.

Doesn’t mean it’s easy. And I sure resisted that for a while until I surrendered to it.

But of course, that’s why I am here so I can share how I leveraged my anxiety for a life of purpose and ease.

Anxiety has many faces: social, separation, generalised anxiety, to full blown panic disorder. When not expressed and processed properly, it can lead to a vast ray of physical and psychological symptoms such as chronic pain, tension, hormonal, digestive, bowel, sleep, energy, interpersonal issues, and much more.

Anxiety is not actually an emotion. It’s a state of being.

Walk towards it.

Anxiety persists because we avoid it. Without finding what is actually rotting in your room, the stink of the rotten food in your room will continue!

That first step to freeing yourself from anxiety is to befriend the anxiety.

The story behind the circles and the DAO calligraphy in the rooms 🖌️

Daoism emphasises harmony with nature, self-discovery, and enlightenment.

Our initial name was different, but my former business partner suggested Project Dao, and it perfectly captured our mission. We aim to project Dao, the path, the way, the journey towards self-discovery and ultimately to the truth.

I envisioned a calligraphy of a circle and the character ‘Dao’ hanging on the walls. I was fortunate to find a Buddhist monk in Sydney who agreed to write these calligraphies for us.

When I arrived at the temple, the monk asked me “Why the circle?”

I took a moment to reflect. ‘It’s a symbol of unity,’ I replied.

‘We are all part of the greater whole, connected to nature and each other.’

‘And the circle has no beginning or end: It represents the eternal cycle of life.’

The monk smiled. ‘You deserve these circles,’ he replied.

This is how there’s the circle and the DAO calligraphy came to hang by your head.

7 years on, we are still here projecting DAO. I am so proud of us, all practitioners who have ever done their beautiful work here and the patients who braved to embark on their healing journey ❤️

I love doing my kettlebell training, pull ups and push ups, and having a sweat in the morning. Makes me feel strong. Life feels delightful.

Then there’s Qigong.

Slowing down to tune into my breath, my body, consciousness, and my spirit, Qigong practice to me is essential to my deep sense of vitality.

More I tune into myself, the more connected I feel to the universe, the world around me.

This is quite marvellous, magical even. To realise that attuning to myself is the portal to the universe at large.

Self care starts with self attunement ✨

Once you are attuned to yourself, you will hear what you desire.

Sometimes the messages do come, they arrive in our solar plexus. From a Chinese medicine view point, it’s your Lungs that bring “inspiration” from the “heaven/divine/God/mother nature” with each inhalation and bring it to the solar plexus.

Sometimes the messages might look like:
🌱 “I need to leave my job”
🌱 “I should apply for this job”
🌱 “I want to go to this retreat”
🌱 “I want to go travelling for 3 months”
🌱 “I want to come home”

The message arrives and almost immediately, there’s a story.

Some typical stories are:
🔻 “I can’t afford to do that”
🔻 “I can’t make that work”
🔻 “I need this”
🔻 “If I give this up, I won’t be able to make a living”
🔻 “They will not accept me if I do this”

These stories are what stops us from moving towards the inspirations.

The feelings that arise with these stories bring us sense of tightness, contraction, frustrations, resentment, guilt, shame, sadness, anger, fear…

The behaviours that arise from these stories are often withdrawal, denial, distractions, self soothing with addictive behaviours, isolation…

These stories are what blocks us from moving forward to our destinies.

So what to do.

You know what you need to do for yourself but you cannot move towards it because your story keeps you stuck. Turn that story around and see how that feels to your heart.

🔥“I can afford to do that”
🔥“I can make that work”
🔥“I don’t need this”
🔥“If I don’t give this up, I won’t be able to make a living”
🔥“They will accept me if I do this”

Hold the statement that is the opposite of what contracts your body and see how that feels to you. Open your heart to the new sentence. See if you can hold that for a moment, just to see how that makes you feel.

There’s no one who can care for you like you can.
You are your best medicine.

Suppressed anger & autoimmune diseases from a classical Chinese medicine perspective 🌱

In Chinese medicine, diseases arise not only from external factors such as Heat, Cold, Dampness, Toxins, Dryness, and Summer Heat, but also from our internal emotional states.

Classical Chinese Medicine teaches us that all organs relate to and are affected by different emotions.

Let’s look at Anger 🔥

Anger, relates to the Liver Organ. When fully expressed, anger dissipates via the Liver Channel. When it is suppressed our body packs this unexpressed anger away into our Blood system, in particular the Luo Channel of the Liver.
Simply put, the Luo channels are attached to the Primary Channels and act as reservoirs to dump pathogens and hold them in latency until they can be dealt with. These pathogens can be internally generated, or externally generated.

The Luo Channel in each organ has a limited amount of space. When it becomes full, it spills over to the related Primary Channel, making one become conscious of those repressed emotions, even if we can’t recognise where the agitation comes from as it may a long-forgotten event, nevertheless the result of the pent-up emotional stagnation spilling over to the Primary Channel makes one become agitated and upset, and can affect the function of the relative Organ itself.

So when we look at repressed anger and the Liver, one of the primary functions of the Liver is to generate Blood and store it. When Liver Qi stagnates, it causes stagnation in the Blood. When we have a lot of repressed anger, our Blood is doubly insulted from the Luo Channel and from the Primary Channel of the Liver system. In turn, it retards the production of Blood, making the Blood stagnate even more.

When Blood stagnates, it can create Heat in the system. Heat further damages the Blood, creating a situation which from a Western medicine perspective is labelled an autoimmune response, raising the inflammation markers. Depending on the state of your other systems’ relative strength and weakness, inflammation lands on places where first it is safe for your body to hold latency until it cannot anymore, giving rise to chronic inflammation.
